Tonight I saw Watchmen and I didn’t like it at all. It was a very scattered movie, with poor pacing and structure. There were times when it was a wonderful psychedelic transcendentalist manifesto, with characters saying things and being in places that mirrored my own experiences with altered states of consciousness, accompanied by excellent music (e.g. music from Philip Glass’s Koyaanisqatsi score). But then at other times the story became so ridiculous and disconnected, and the music so oddly chosen, that I wasn’t sure if the movie was supposed to be a comedy or not. One moment a character is discovering something on the whole mundane, accompanied by revelatory and profound music appropriate for the idea of discovering something wonderful, and the next moment two people are having sex in a futuristic jet pod above Manhattan, with various “accidental” button pushes that produced vulgar comedic representations of orgasm, all while a rendition of the song “Hallelujah” played. What a stupid movie. Don’t go see it.
